According to reports from TeamTalk, a transfer snub from Tanguy Ndombele has seen Manchester United turn their attentions towards Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier, whose influence in north London has noticeably waned since he featured so prominently in their 2015/16 Premier League title bid. Last term, he made just 18 starts in the top flight.
Whilst Ed Woodward and co may have their eyes on the England international, it is hard to understand the reasoning behind their interest. Here are two reasons why Dier would be a terrible acquisition for the Old Trafford outfit.
United have enough in defensive midfield
United may need to add reinforcements to their playing squad this summer, but defensive midfield is not an area in which they are lacking. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer already has Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay to rely upon in the midfield of the park to shield his defence, and whilst Fred has struggled to live up to expectations since arriving last summer, he can also do a job in that position and could perform better next season after having a year to settle in England.
Dier may be a more proven player than McTominay, but he certainly lacks Matic’s winning mentality – having won two Premier League titles at Chelsea – while the jury’s still out on Fred. Overall, it’s not clear the Spurs man is a definite upgrade on any of United’s current anchor options.
Man United need big names, not second-rate signings
Manchester United have not had the best of starts to this current transfer market, despite being one of the biggest clubs on the planet. Whilst Real Madrid, for example, bring in star names such as Eden Hazard as they rebuild their squad, United have so far brought in only one player, and a Championship one at that.
Now, they are reportedly targeting a man who started just 22 games last campaign in all competitions, and the 40-cap midfielder appears to be on United’s radar purely because they look to have lost out on Ndombele, their original target.
What does this say about England’s most successful club? United need to be bringing in star names to match their prestige, not a player who isn’t even a guaranteed starter for a team the Red Devils should really be aiming to try and finish above next season.
