Manchester United interim boss Ole Gunnar Solksjaer resisted the urge to spend during the January transfer window.
The Norwegian legend replaced Jose Mourinho early in December and became the first Manchester United manager to win his first six league games. Many players have enjoyed a new lease of life under the new boss, with Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford flourishing under his leadership. As a result, Solskjaer opted to keep his chequebook closed throughout January.
Despite their lack of spending, the summer transfer window should be a completely different story. United’s excellent form has drastically increased Solskjaer’s chances of landing the job permanently. The Red Devils are also set to appoint a director of football in the summer to improve the chances of success in the window.
One man who would get fans off their seat at Old Trafford is PSV Eindhoven starlet – Steven Bergwijn. Valued at £27m by Transfermarkt, the 21-year-old has burst on the scene in the Eredivisie after establishing himself as a first-team regular for his side. Bergwijn has been one of the most consistent performers in the Eredivisie in recent seasons and was rewarded for his form with a call up to the senior Holland national team in October.
After netting eight goals and registering seven assists last season, the youngster has been in fine form yet again, scoring nine as well as creating nine for his team-mates in the current campaign. With blistering pace and excellent dribbling ability, Bergwijn would be a nightmare for Premier League defenders. Under Solksjaer’s tutelage, he could flourish on English shores.
Prising him from Holland could prove costly, but Bergwijn would be a mainstay in the United attack for years to come.
Manchester United fans, thoughts?
