Serge Aurier has been named in FIFPro Africa’s best XI of 2019, to the surprise of Tottenham Hotspur fans.
The official Twitter account of the Confederation of African Football announced the full XI on Tuesday.
The likes of Liverpool trio Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Joel Matip, Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have all been included, along with Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.
Aurier, though, has been named at right-back after a year in which Spurs reached the Champions League final and finished in the Premier League’s top four.
But fans have expressed their shock at the 27-year-old’s inclusion, with the full-back having made a number of mistakes this term, including conceding a penalty against Liverpool and being sent off against Southampton.
No clues whatsoever: Which seasons do these iconic Spurs images belong to?
And a few other supporters have insisted that Spurs need to invest in the position, despite Aurier’s nod.
Indeed, Aurier appears to be the only senior right-back trusted by manager Jose Mourinho, with Kyle Walker-Peters struggling to make his mark under the Portuguese.
He has yet to play under the ex-Chelsea boss in the league.
It remains to be seen if Aurier will get any help as the season progresses.
Meanwhile, Spurs have been given some bad news over Christian Eriksen.
