Notoriously-opinionated pundit Tony Cascarino has delivered his verdict in The Times for what Tottenham Hotspur need to do during the January transfer window, saying that a new centre-back is needed as Toby Alderweireld is no longer the player he once was.
What did he say?
Having not brought a single player in during the summer transfer window, it is widely expected that Spurs could look to sign at least one individual before deadline at the end of the month.
Speaking to The Times about what Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy’s New Year transfer priorities should be, the 56-year-old said:
“Most definitely a centre half. I don’t think Toby Alderweireld is the defender he was, so they could do with more depth there.”
What do his comments mean?
Not only is the former Chelsea striker urging the north London outfit to bring a new central defender to the club, but he has obviously not been impressed with the level of performances from the Belgian.
The 29-year-old certainly didn’t shine in his side’s 3-1 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Wembley at the weekend, and Cascarino is hinting that he should no longer be starting ahead of or with the likes of Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen at the heart of the Spurs backline.
Given he has a £25m release clause that could be activated by potential new suitors next summer, The Times pundit obviously feels that Tottenham should buy a new centre-back to bed in now rather potentially waiting until the Belgian could leave later this year.
